As I sat down to type this week's newsletter, I realized that I failed to send out last week's newsletter by e-mail. I apologize for that mistake! If I make that mistake again, you can always access the latest Inside Scoop Newsletter at the Inside Scoop Newsletter section of our class website.
Volunteer Opportunities
With our busy week ahead, I am still seeking some parent volunteers to help with the Fall Festival booths and our Book Fair on Monday and Tuesday. Your child should have brought home another copy of the volunteer sheets today. If you can help, even for just a bit, it would be greatly appreciated!
Word Work at Home Sheets
The first quarter is over, and with the beginning of the second quarter also comes a new homework routine. As I think about the students' work during the 1st quarter, there were times when the students were ready to move more quickly, and times when they could have really used some extra time to understand the word study concepts. Because of this, I am going to change the way word study works in the classroom. Rather than have students practice their word study for homework, we are going to work on it in class. That way we will be able to be more flexible in our studies, and students' needs will be better met. Therefore, students will not be completing Word Work at Home sheets for now.
Math Facts
While I am taking away the Word Work at Home sheets, I would like to add in some basic math fact practice. At this point, all students should be proficient with their addition and subtraction facts. Students should be well on their way to being proficient with their multiplication and division facts as well. If your child struggles to remember his/her math facts quickly, please take just 5 or 10 minutes to practice those facts in the evening. I have flashcards and fact triangles available for students to take home if they need them. Please let me know if you would like some, and I will send them with your child.
Next Week:
In reading, we will explore how readers stop to ask questions as they are reading.
In writing, we will be writing reflections about our first quarter.
In math, we will continue to look at decimals.
In social studies/science, we will begin to explore how plants and animals adapt to their environment.
